Overcoming Holiday Hurdles

We’re getting into the holiday season – a time of joy, celebration, and indulgence.  For some, maintaining a healthy lifestyle during this time can be challenging. There’s tempting treats, busy schedules, and more to navigate but with the right mindset and strategies, you can still prioritise your health and wellness goals.

Set Realistic Goals:

Instead of aiming for perfection, acknowledge that some flexibility is needed and set realistic goals.  Adjust your fitness goals to align with the festivities and remember that a few deviations won’t undo all your hard work.

Plan Your Workouts:

With lots of holiday events filling your calendar, remember to schedule your exercise sessions in like any other appointment and treat them with the same level of importance.  You’ll be less likely to skip a workout due to a last-minute invitation or holiday errand.

Embrace Quick Workouts:

Recognize that shorter, high-intensity workouts can be just as effective as longer sessions. Incorporate quick, efficient exercises into your routine to maximize your time. High-intensity interval training is a great option for boosting metabolism in a short amount of time.

Get Creative with Home Workouts:

There are lots of bodyweight exercises that require minimal equipment if you don’t want to go to the gym. Consider investing in resistance bands or dumbbells for added resistance. YouTube and fitness apps offer a wealth of at-home workout routines suitable for various fitness levels – or get in touch with me for access to the recordings in the 6 week online bodyweight group training sessions I’ve been running.

Make Fitness a Family Affair:

Turn fitness into a family activity by involving your loved ones. Go for a group walk, organize a friendly game of touch, or challenge each other to a dance-off. This not only keeps you active but also creates memorable moments with your family during the holiday season.

Stay Hydrated:

Amidst the holiday cheer, it’s easy to forget about staying hydrated. Water is essential for overall health and can help control your appetite. Carry a reusable water bottle with you, and make a conscious effort to drink enough water throughout the day, especially before indulging in holiday treats.

Mindful Eating:

Part of the holiday experience is enjoying delicious meals and treats. Practice mindful eating by savouring each bite and paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Be selective in your indulgences, choosing your favourite holiday treats while maintaining balance in your overall diet.

Prioritize Sleep:

Adequate sleep is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Despite the busyness of the season, prioritize getting enough rest. Lack of sleep can affect your energy levels and decision-making, potentially leading to poor food choices and decreased motivation for exercise.

Maintaining your fitness goals during the Christmas season can be challenging, but a proactive approach and some flexibility can be helpful. The key is finding a balance that allows you to enjoy the holiday season while still making choices that align with your wellness goals. By implementing these strategies, you’ll not only survive the holiday season but emerge on the other side feeling healthy, happy, and ready to tackle the new year ahead.
